Local Thorn R2L2s
The Thorn R2L2s are part of the county councils £7,600,000 project for saving energy on street lighting. This is happening all over the county but the South Lakeland area just happened at the same time that I was on holiday in February 2015. Coming back to all these new lights was certainly a surprise.

At the junction with Rothay Road, Compston Road, Church Street and Kelsick Road this example resides. This column used to support a pair a black painted Philips SGS203s. This new arrangement will at least bring some uniformity to the lighting because one of the SGS lights ran a SON-T and the other a metal halide.

I decided to revisit and document some of the other examples. In the first image all the old lanterns were black painted Philips SGS203s on out reach brackets like the one above. One SGS did get damaged in 2013 and was replaced with an Urbis Opalo. The Opalo was on the second column along in the below left image.

The example below had an out reach bracket supporting an aluminium canopied Thorn Alpha 8, running a 150W metal halide with a polycarbonate bowl and was dayburning for its last few days of its service. I would have liked to save that lantern but as I said they were replaced when I was on holiday and I did not expect them to be replaced. Moral never go away even for 1 week.

This dayburning example has since been repaired. This column used to have a black outreach bracket and a metal halide, black painted Philips SGS203.

Kelswick Road is home to a pair of R2L2s they both replaced SGS203s running 150W metal halides.

A large majority of these lanterns replaced remote geared Thorn Alpha 3s running SON-Ts and metal halide lamps. Some Alpha 3s had been replaced with other lanterns in the past.
This column did have an Alpha 3 running a SON-T when the R2L2 was installed. This column is also fitted with a rather elderly backlit sign that is probably as old as the column and Alpha 3.

This next one also supported an Alpha 3 however this one had been fitted with a metal halide lamp conversion. The back ground column supported an Urbis Opalo, which replaced an Alpha 3 between March 2009 and July 2011 (according to 'Street View').
The lantern in the left image replaced an Urbis Opalo while in right image the lanterns went Philips SGS203 (metal halide), Thorn Alpha 3 (HPS?), Urbis Opalo (MH) & Thorn Alpha 3 (MH)
